A history of massage

Hello friends,I've recently been listening to a really great podcast series called "Folding Towels" by a couple of massage therapists.

It's mostly aimed at massage therapists, but I wanted to share a nice episode about the history of massage.

Episode 125: Touch is older than Medicine. The episode discusses the origins and development of massage. It's likely that massage developed in many different places all at the same time.

Consider that massage at it's most basic is intentional touch.Intentional, skilled, directed, purposeful touch.

Different regions of the world incorporated massage into their systems of medicine and developed styles that have both shared and unique techniques.

Swedish massage is known for its broad strokes often with forearms and using oil.

Chinese massage usually involves a lot more of what we now term "trigger point therapy", as well as vibration and tapotement (tapping, slapping pummelling).

Thai massage is known for its emphasis on stretching and interesting use of body parts (other than the hands and forearms) to apply pressure and torque.

Ayurvedic massage sees massage as part of their medicine.

Historically, massage was not separate from other parts of their health treatments.

Medicinal oils were massaged into the skin as part of therapy.

If you'd like to learn more about the origins and history of massage, I highly recommend listening to the podcast!
